Using the same components as the LAR (Light Automatic Rifle), FN has
developed a sustained-fire rifle, the LAR HB, that differs from the LAR
only by having a barrel that is twice as heavy, a strengthened wraparound
handguard and a factory installed bipod. This weapon adds considerably
to the flexibility of the FN 7.62 (.308) family. Para-troopers, marines and
other assault units are often called on to carry out operations where the
use of heavier and more cumbersome machine guns is quite different.
However, the defense of command posts, communications, logistic or
field hospital installations requires the use of very simple and inexpensive
automatic weapons since the soldiers in these units are not primarily
trained to serve a machine gun. The LAR HB is the ideal solution for
several reasons: it is quite compact considering its role; it handles just
as easily as the standard LAR; cartridges, magazines and parts are
interchangable with those of the LAR; and it assures highly accurate
sustained fire to support riflemen in the critical phases of an assualt
disengagement, a landing or mopping up operations...
